Our Peace Garden

Our Peace Garden

What is a Peace Garden?

A peace garden is a place where children and adults can sit quietly and enjoy the peace and calm of their natural surroundings to help escape the hustle and bustle of today’s world.

It is a quiet space where children and adults can feel grounded, safe, calm and interact with nature and God.  It also supports mental health, provides time for reflection, thought and deepening of spirituality.

Tritlington’s Peace Garden

We had a dream to create a peace garden in the grounds of Tritlington First School.  So we began by asking the children to think about what a peaceful garden would look like and what they would like to see in it.  We then used all of the designs created by Tritlington children to create an overall design to use.

We are extremely thankful for the generosity of our local community for their support to help us with our journey to make our very own peace garden.

As joint headteachers of Tritlington School we feel strongly that while we are charged with ensuring academic success, we also take a holistic approach ensuring we support and nurture pupils' wellbeing too, so this was a very special project for us.

The final design of our Peace Garden is a self-contained space which blends in with the natural, rural setting of Tritlington School, and will be used by all members of our school family, as well as the local community, to enjoy and share. The garden is fully accessible and inclusive of those with physical and sensory impairments.

After consultation with children, school staff and parents the following has been included in the final design:

  • The area is enclosed with a small timber picket fence with an entrance and exit arch, with the words Peace Garden written on the arch to give a lovely welcoming feature for the children.

  • A large picket fence at the back of the garden features musical instruments for children to access.

  • A textured pathway, including paving slabs which the children have made with mosaic pattern designs, is inside the garden to create visual interest.  This will allow children to walk through the peace garden and access the different areas.

  • As you walk along the pathway the children will walk through six archways

  • Planters, housing a variety of plants such as lavender, sage, chives, elephants ear etc, will be used along the pathway to provide a sensory experience, exciting the senses of sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing.

  • Seating in varying designs such as benches, a hexagonal teepee and a group area provides spaces for children to sit by themselves, with friends or in a small group to socialise or spend time in quiet reflection or prayer.

The Peace Garden was completed in two phases:

Phase 1 Grounds work team to install the fence, path, arches, planters and benches

Phase 2 Planting – This will be an opportunity to invite parents, children and community members to plant up the flowers, shrubs, herbs or grasses for all to enjoy for years to come.
